Kaarinassa vuonna 1920 syntynyt Touko Laaksonen, taiteilijanimeltään Tom of Finland, sai aikaan kulttuuri-ilmiön ikonisilla homoeroottisilla taideteoksillaan. Yhdysvalloissa hänen kuvituksiaan julkaistiin ensi kerran keväällä 1957 uraauurtavassa miehisessä Physique Pictorial -aikakauslehdessä. Tom of Finlandia pidetään eräänä 1900-luvun vaikutusvaltaisimmista taiteilijoista, jonka teoksia on taidemuseoiden pysyvissä kokoelmissa eri puolilla maailmaa. TOM’s Men – Tomin miehet – onkin kuvastona vahvasti tunnistettava ja näin myös pysyvä osa globaalia populaarikulttuuria.
